About Hearing Loss
- Hearing loss is the second most chronic condition affecting older adults
- Hearing can usually be improved with hearing devices
- Hearing loss negatively impacts on ones ability to communicate, social interaction and quality of life.
Types of Hearing Disorders
- Conductive Hearing Loss – Occurs when the cause of the loss lies in the external or middle ear. eg. Middle ear infection.
- Sensorineural Hearing Loss – Occurs when the cause of the loss lies in the cochlea and /or auditory nerve. eg. Excessive noise exposure.
- Auditory Processing Disorder – Occurs when the cause of the difficulty lies within the Central Auditory Nervous System.
Taking steps to address hearing loss:
In many cases, hearing loss deteriorates gradually over time, it is often advanced before people recognise and finally accept that they have a problem. They often compensate for this, making it difficult to perceive the gradual loss of their hearing ability in an objective way. That is why it is often carers and/or family members who urge people to have their first hearing test.
About Speech and Language Difficulties in Children
Approximately 8-10% of children have a speech and/or language impairment. Speech and language can affect the way children pronounce sounds, process and understand information, express themselves and progress in their literacy.
Speech and language can help children become effective communicators, improve their social/emotional adjustment and quality of life.
The first step to addressing hearing loss, auditory processing, speech and language is an initial consultation at Chyrisse Heine & Associates. Please contact us to arrange an appointment.
